MycaNova® Mycelium
Carbon footprint reduction for synthetic materials
MycaNova Mycelium is a 100% biologic material, upcycled from citric acid production. It can blend straightforwardly within existing formulation and production platforms to obtain high-quality synthetic materials without any loss in quality or performance while ensuring all creative opportunities. In this regard, MycaNova opens pathways to decrease the use of fossil-based materials and minimize the environmental impact of the fashion, interior and automotive industries.

MycaNova – Mycelium Redefined
Mycelium is the root structure of fungi, a vast network of microscopically thin, branched fibers called hyphae, and grows through substrates like soil, wood, or agricultural waste. In nature, mycelium is known for breaking down organic material, making essential nutrients available to other organisms. Today, mycelium has emerged as a versatile and sustainable material with applications across multiple industries.
MycaNova Mycelium is the dried, powdered form of mycelium obtained from A. Niger. The 100% biologic material is fully biodegradable and found to be directly compatible with components for the production of synthetic materials composed of polyurethane (PU) or polyvinylchloride (PVC). By infusing our natural mycelium into these materials, thereby replacing fossil-based materials, the carbon footprint and environmental impact are lowered significantly.
MycaNova Mycelium is instantly applicable with currently used and widely accepted production techniques of synthetic leather alternatives. No pretreatment or equipment adjustments are needed to include the mycelium powder with coating (direct or transfer) or coagulation techniques. Thanks to this remarkable compatibility with production techniques, PU/PVC (in various forms, including high-solid, solvent-based, water-based, and bio-based) and additives, up to 40% of fossil-based polymers can be replaced.
Mycelium infusion does not influence the final technical properties of the end material. As MycaNova is available in different particle sizes, it perfectly blends with existing production techniques, without any quality loss, and not limiting any design freedom. Therefore, MycaNova plays a significant role in raising environmental awareness in automotive, footwear, apparel, leather goods, and upholstery.
Technology
Innovation through mycelium
MycaNova Mycelium growth starts with our unique raw material: sugar beet molasses. As the only citric acid producer worldwide, we optimized our A. Niger strain to thrive on the waste material of the sugar industry and do not rely on sugar syrups from the food chain. This well-thought-out choice also allows us to valorize all waste streams. Furthermore, our production procedure results in a unique, high-fibrous mycelium found nowhere else.
After a tedious strain selection to find the optimal mycelium and a long R&D trajectory to obtain the right material characteristics, almost every mycelium startup stumbles at the last hurdle: the upscaling of mycelium production. No problem at Citribel, as we have already produced mycelium through surface fermentation for over 100 years. With our experience, high control over fermentation temperature, humidity, and airflow, and a 24/7 production regime, we can guarantee a stable and high-quality output of this unique material.
We developed an unparalleled drying procedure to turn the high-fibrous material into a free-flowing powder with high control over particle size and distribution. The mycelium can be applied as such, or it can be extensively purified to acquire an odorless and colorless material. In this regard, the right fit can be provided for every material production technique and anticipated final application.
About
Citribel – A Belgian Hidden Gem
MycaNova is a brand of Citribel, a leading European producer of high-quality citric acid. Since 1919, we produce circular citric acid and mycelium via surface fermentation technology – a unique approach worldwide! Citribel’s mycelium is a peculiar material, and these tiny fibers promise to be a game-changer for various innovative applications. In the coming years, Citribel will intensify its focus on mycelium, its derivatives, and applications, aiming to become a key player in the fascinating world of fungi.
We find ourselves at the hallmark of a global transition towards sustainability and circularity. Our products and processes derive from nature; it is our duty and privilege to give back to the environment. We continuously strive to do better, push boundaries, and close the circle. It doesn’t just happen. We balance thoughtful decision-making and bold curiosity. We embrace the wisdom of uncertainty, as it invites us to get creative, make things work differently, and have fun along the way.
With MycaNova, our mission is to transform mycelium, a co-product generated during citric acid production, into a valuable resource. By doing so, we aim to rapidly and significantly reduce the environmental impact of consumer goods, promote animal welfare, and deliver high-quality products on an industrial scale. We are dedicated to driving positive change through innovative practices, research, and collaborative efforts to create a better future for the planet and its inhabitants.
